Is my mother a narcissist, or is that just what mothers are like?

The short answer first. No quiz can diagnose your mother, and a page that offers to is not being straight with you. What it can do is put a name and a shape on twenty things you actually watched, which is the thing you have never been allowed to do out loud. And the pattern is real: a 2025 systematic review of eight studies found the effects of a narcissistic parent on the adult child, insecure attachment, anxiety, depression, real but small to moderate, with the vulnerable form the stronger driver. Real, not imagined. Not the whole story of you either.

Every daughter of a narcissistic mother asked this question years before she typed it. You had no comparison growing up; that was the whole problem. Twenty things you watched her do, with your father, with your siblings, with other adults, with you, scored on six axes the same way as the Dark Mirror. Then you see where she sits against every other parent who has been rated by the child they raised.

Every person you rate goes into their own dataset on the Index, never mixed with people who answered about themselves. The curve for parents opens at 30 ratings.

Things you have probably watched happen

  • How she talked about you to other people, and to your face.
  • Whose feelings the house was arranged around.
  • What a good day cost you, and what a bad day cost everyone.

Every option in the take is a thing a person did, not a thing they meant. Answer with what you saw.

Six axes, one verdict

Psychopathic, sociopathic, narcissistic, borderline, histrionic, neurotypical. The type they read as, the band on every axis, and where they sit against everyone rated.

How to carry yourself

Three lines per verdict from someone who has the pattern from the inside. Recognition, never a plan of attack.

Then send it to them

The result carries a link they can open and take about themselves. The gap between the two readings is usually the whole story.

Frequently asked questions

Can this tell me if my mother is a narcissist?

No. Nothing on the internet can, and this page does not claim to. It tells you what they read as on six axes, from twenty things you watched them do, and how that compares with everyone who has been rated. A diagnosis needs a clinician, a history, and the person in the room.

Is this the same as the daughter quiz?

No. The Daughter Pattern Assessment reads what growing up inside it built into you. This one reads her: twenty things you watched her do, scored on six axes. Take both and you have the pair, the pattern and what it made.

Is my mother a narcissist or borderline?

Nothing here can tell you which, and the reason is useful rather than evasive. The two patterns share the parts a child notices: the house arranged around one person's feelings, the reversals, the version of events that changes. They differ at the core. The narcissistic pattern needs admiration and treats a slight as an injury. The borderline pattern fears being left and treats distance as the injury. Watch which one the worst days were about. The rating below scores both axes separately, so you get the shape of what you saw rather than one label for it.

Is my mother a narcissist or just selfish?

Selfishness is a preference. What this rating reads is a pattern: whether it held across years, across people who were not you, and across situations where it cost her something to keep. A selfish person takes the bigger half. The pattern people are asking about here is the one where your account of an event gets replaced by hers, and you learn to check yours against it. Twenty scenarios is not a diagnosis of her, and it is a better instrument than the argument you have been having with yourself.

Is my mother a narcissist or emotionally immature?

Emotional immaturity is the softer reading, and for some mothers it is the accurate one. The line worth watching is direction. An emotionally immature parent cannot hold your feeling and gets overwhelmed. The pattern this rating scores is the one where your feeling gets used: brought up later, repeated to other people, or turned into evidence about you. Both leave a child managing an adult. Only one of them is a strategy, and the scenarios are written to tell them apart.

Is rating my mother disloyal?

It is private, and it is a reading of what you saw, not an accusation. Nobody sees the result unless you show them. Naming a pattern is the first thing a good therapist would ask you to do.

Nothing on this page or its results is a diagnosis of anyone. What a person reads as on this instrument, as answered by one person who knows them, is a reading aid. Only a clinician can diagnose, and only with a proper assessment. Aggregates from rated people live on the Dark Mirror Index.
